Control Your Cravings

By Steven L Becraft
I have a little story to share about hunger and cravings...

A few weeks ago, I woke up from a nap craving a Bloomin' Onion from Outback Steakhouse. I know right, the worst possible thing I could crave. I almost wasn't sure if it was just a bad dream, but I soon realized the craving was still there after I was wide awake.

Fast-forward to yesterday, I didn't plan my meals for the day very well and as a result, I only ate peanut butter and an apple the whole day. Needless to say, I was starving!!! On my way home, I got a bad craving for a Taco Bell quesadilla. AHHHH!!! I drove away from home in the direction of the nearest Taco Bell and the whole way, I was battling this craving. On one hand, I was telling myself that no one would know, that it would be over and done in a few minutes and I would be satisfied. On the other hand, I knew that it wouldn't really satisfy me and I would feel worse for having eaten this. I finally told myself much louder that it wasn't worth it and I turned around and went home. When I got home, I made a healthier choice and had some organic blue corn tortilla chips with organic salsa. To me, this was victory!

One thing I've learned over the years is that when I indulge in these kinds of cravings, it's never as satisfying as I imagine it will be. I'm talking about hard-core, I need it more than anything else kind of cravings. Don't get me wrong, I will occasionally have a soda or chocolate when I want to, but the cravings I'm talking about are almost like a demonic possession. When this happens, I dig deep into my core of truth and uncover the strength to say "No!". I've discovered it is crucial to understand the intent and motivation behind my cravings and this allows me to take ownership and accountability for my health.

Some of you may know this, but I have adhered to a plant-based diet for some time now and have reaped amazing benefits for doing so. I advocate healthy lifestyles and sometimes it is healthy for your being to indulge. I wanted to share this story to hopefully let you know that you are not alone, we all have cravings and that it is okay to allow yourself to eat less than optimal foods occasionally and you can still achieve amazing, vibrant health.

Here are a few tips to help you get a handle on your cravings:

  • Never let yourself go hungry. Eat regular snacks and meals, don't skip!
  • Always carry food with you! An apple or banana is the easiest quick 'carry-over' until you can get to a meal.
  • When you experience 'demonic possession cravings', ask yourself, "Is eating this worth it?" It= my health, my goals, my self-esteem
  • Allow yourself to have regular, minimal amounts of less-than-optimal foods so that you can avoid these extreme cravings. (Example: A daily piece of chocolate and/or glass of wine)
